I sent Gene a message about a week ago that for sure he would enjoy and respond to. I checked his activity today and he hasn’t contributed anything in over 3 months!! Does anyone know him well enough to check up on him? or have I simply missed an epic fallout here?

Thanks in advance.

Which Gene?

That brings up the five hundred pound gorilla in the elevator question. I hope nothing has happened to vipond33 and that he is on a electronics free, self imposed, black-out, but what happens when something does happen to one of us? How would the others know? Is there a system for that here? A large number of us are on the back nine of the par three of life … you know …

This is one of the key reasons a “last visited” field on a user home page would be such an excellent idea (it’s been discussed) – I’d love to know if he’s watching our every move, with an amusing, wry smile, and just not posting right now, or if he’s ….

There are other forums that I belong to that have the “last visited” field and it is very useful. I find it hard to believe that Gene, who has contributed so much to the site, has over 90 people listed as friends just “poofed”. Someone on here must know how to reach him and check up on him. I hope all is well. I will share with you what I sent him, I knew that once he saw it, he certainly would have responded:

Ok, so does anyone on the forum who may live in Toronto/Ontario area know where he may work and can make a call? Does anyone want to stop by a local DMV and do a UVIP search? His plate is seen in one of his posts. Sadly, if he hasn’t posted in this long, I feel that he may have passed on… would be nice to know, perhaps the mods can RIP his status.

I like to think that Gene just became disheartened with the site. Have a look at the last paragraph that he apparently added to his profile description.

Have a look at the last paragraph that he apparently added to his profile description.

Just for info – that was added a while before his last posting, and I’ve exchanged correspondence with him since then. I don’t believe that was a factor, but that’s just my feeling about it.

Then good riddance

He is (I write in the present tense until I hear otherwise) an excellent woodworker and a decent human being. If the site has lost him permanently, for whatever reason, it’s our loss.

Not with that attitude, IMO.

No probs JJ – you’re entitled to your opinion.

I personally miss seeing his spectacular projects, and reading some of his witty repartee.

(Interesting tag-line, by the way)

I have learned from another forum that its best to leave politics and religion at the door and come in to discuss woodworking with only that as the focus. There are plenty of other forums to discuss the former. Thanks for the insight ChuckV and KK – I didn’t see the last line of his profile – is it possible that it was added recently? I don’t follow the OT posts…

We can’t.
ESTRAGON: Why not?
VLADIMIR: We’re waiting for Godot.
ESTRAGON: (despairingly). Ah! (Pause.) You’re sure it was here?
VLADIMIR: What?
ESTRAGON: That we were to wait.
VLADIMIR: He said by the tree. (They look at the tree.) Do you see any others?
ESTRAGON: What is it?
VLADIMIR: I don’t know. A willow.
ESTRAGON: Where are the leaves?
VLADIMIR:

It must be dead.

ESTRAGON: No more weeping.
VLADIMIR: Or perhaps it’s not the season.
ESTRAGON: Looks to me more like a bush.
VLADIMIR: A shrub.
ESTRAGON: A bush.
VLADIMIR: A—. What are you insinuating? That we’ve come to the wrong place?
ESTRAGON: He should be here.
VLADIMIR: He didn’t say for sure he’d come.
ESTRAGON: And if he doesn’t come?
VLADIMIR: We’ll come back tomorrow.
ESTRAGON: And then the day after tomorrow.
VLADIMIR: Possibly.
ESTRAGON: And so on.
VLADIMIR: The point is—
ESTRAGON: Until he comes.
VLADIMIR: You’re merciless.
ESTRAGON: We came here yesterday.
VLADIMIR: Ah no, there you’re mistaken.
ESTRAGON: What did we do yesterday?
VLADIMIR: What did we do yesterday?
ESTRAGON: Yes.
VLADIMIR: Why . . . (Angrily.) Nothing is certain when you’re about.
ESTRAGON: In my opinion we were here.
VLADIMIR: (looking round). You recognize the place?
ESTRAGON: I didn’t say that.
VLADIMIR: Well?
ESTRAGON: That makes no difference.
VLADIMIR: All the same . . . that tree . . . (turning towards auditorium) that bog . . .
ESTRAGON: You’re sure it was this evening?
VLADIMIR: What?
ESTRAGON: That we were to wait.
VLADIMIR: He said Saturday. (Pause.) I think.
ESTRAGON: You think.
VLADIMIR: I must have made a note of it. (He fumbles in his pockets, bursting with miscellaneous rubbish.)
ESTRAGON: (very insidious). But what Saturday? And is it Saturday? Is it not rather Sunday? (Pause.) Or Monday? (Pause.) Or Friday?
VLADIMIR: (looking wildly about him, as though the date was inscribed in the landscape). It’s not possible!
ESTRAGON: Or Thursday?
VLADIMIR: What’ll we do?
ESTRAGON: If he came yesterday and we weren’t here you may be sure he won’t come again today.
VLADIMIR: But you say we were here yesterday.
ESTRAGON: I may be mistaken. (Pause.) Let’s stop talking for a minute, do you mind?
VLADIMIR: (feebly). All right. (Estragon sits down on the mound. Vladimir paces agitatedly to and fro, halting from time to time to gaze into distance off. Estragon falls asleep. Vladimir halts finally before Estragon.) Gogo! . . . Gogo! . . . GOGO! Estragon wakes with a start.
ESTRAGON: (restored to the horror of his situation). I was asleep! (Despairingly.) Why will you never let me sleep?
VLADIMIR: I felt lonely.
ESTRAGON: I had a dream.
VLADIMIR: Don’t tell me!
ESTRAGON: I dreamt that—
VLADIMIR: DON’T TELL ME!
