Topic tags/keywords: rough-cut hardwood sawmill question

Soon, I will be startiing a couple of projects and will need some oak to build cabinets. I’ve priced it at all of our local lumber providers and I think I need to win the lottery before I start. I’ve heard of others ordering rough cut lumber form the Northeast but I think shipping would be costly to Louisiana plus can I trust some vendor to ship me some good, useable lumber.

I have access to quite a lot of oak trees here in the area and I even have a walnut tree that I need to cut down in the next couple of years but the only sawmill that I could find that would “reasonably” (everyone else said he was reasonable but I thought he was quite high… am I just cheap?) just shut down.

I might consider buying my own small sawmill (I’ve seen a couple for less than $2000) if I thought I get something that was not a piece of junk. I know others that would probably pay me to cut them some lumber if I could get the right rig.

Anyone have any good ideas? Where do y’all get your rough-cut lumber.

Call Woodmizer. They have lists of owners in your area that do custom cutting. Some of them also sale lumber that they’ve cut up.

I have a small sawmill. I can handle logs up to 8 feet in
length and 12 to 36 inches in diameter.

SAWYER —- can mill 36” x 17’—will cut cherry, walnut,
cedar, cypress—travel from Louisiana to Canada—

Selling building full of air dried lumber, all species—7500 bdft—
huge discount for buyer of entire lot.

These are courtesy of Treebones who is a sawyier and maintains a database of sawmill operators across the country.

Another resource is Woodfinder.com.

But if you want to mill your own lumber Wood-Mizer, as Karson says, will either help you find someone with a portable bandsaw in your area or will be more than willing to work with you on purchasing one from them.

keep asking around to find rough lumber. Try Woodfinders , Woodplanet , Woodweb . As far as buying a sawmill to do your own wood , be aware that the mill itself represents a small fraction of the investment you will need to produce wood ready to use. Buying lumber from someone else that is established will look cheap if you do your homework ! It is great to establish a relationship with a sawyer as he will lookout for your needs and can really help .Hope this helps, feel free to ask questions -

If you’re near Ponchatoula, check out Acadian hardwoods. They are a wholesaler but do sale to walk ins. and they have the best prices i’ve seen in the area.
