I griped about the advertisments, and the new forum layout in past threads,

I apologize for that kind of character behavior,
If I was a paying member then I would have every right to make those criticisms.

But because I am using this site free of charge I have no grounds to be critical, no matter how the owners of there site choose to layout there new format.

They have given a free invitation to use there property, for the benefit of learning woodworking skills, from people who are kind of enough to share there knowledge with a forum community.

I for one would like to say, Thankyou for making this valuable worth of information site available FREE of charge.

Please take into consideration some of the requests that members of LJ are making. The more you can accommodate their requests, the more members you will have.

If you look at the advertising and in this case ever spend money at Home Depot you are paying for the site. It isn’t free of charge. If it was they’d shut it down or sell it. I appreciate the people on the site. I’m glad Escalade want’s to make money off of us enough to keep the site up. But, the format needs fixing. I’m sure Home Depot’s monthly check to Escalade that comes from what we spend at the store warrants a correctly working website.

That said, I’m sure they plan on correcting their errors at some point and I’ll patiently use the site for now until it’s done. Like I said, I’m here because of the members. Without us Home Depot pulls their advertising.

I have always thought they should charge something; monthly or yearly…

Someone has to pay for all the expenses.

I think you do have a right to criticize even if you aren’t paying money. This site would be nothing if it weren’t for the members. If you have a question about your saw who answers it? Not the site’s owners but your fellow members. All of the content of this site comes from the users. All the owners provide is the infrastructure. Without us they have nothing. Our opinion matters regardless of whether or not we pay for it. They are making money off of us. It isn’t that big of a deal because we also get something in return but that isn’t enough to let them run the site without taking our interests into account.

Really! Yahoo is free. CNN.com is free. LA Times is free. Amazon is free. Google is free. Should I go on? None of those sites have the pathetic formatting problems that have somehow become okay on this site. If this is a ploy to make even more money from what we bring to the site, then goodbye….......

Honestly this site is an embarrassment now. There are 2 possible explanations about the “formatting issues”

1. It’s a legitimate issue and no one can fix it for several weeks. Given the traffic this site sees, someone is making a lot of money on click ads. I am in IT and have been for most of my life. If this were one of my clients it would have been fixed in 4 hours – regardless of the issues. It’s not that hard. If these issues are real then the site administration is an embarrassment. Also there has been no formal communication. Very unprofessional.

2. And more likely. There are not “Issues”. Something is changing and no one wants to stay. This is also sad. Transparency is key. Even if the news is bad, it is what it is. Get it out there.

This used to be my favorite corner of the internet. Now It represents everything I hate about the internet. I have some experience administering forums. I am an admin on a fairly large automotive based forum and a moderator (with another member here!) on a woodworking forum with 53,000 subscribers. In the past few weeks we’ve had Darrell Peart and The Woodwhisperer spend a few hours answering subscribers questions. Marc even offered to judge a contest and donate a very generous prize. What has lumberjocks done in the past few weeks? Other than completely broken itself; not much worth noting.

This is a great community full of amazing talent and knowledge. This site could make someone a ton of cash on ad revenue alone. I hope someone with the proper business acumen realizes this, seizes an opportunity and steps in to take over and administer this site correctly.

Some years ago I was working with an immigrant from Poland. I was complaining about something. I can’t even remember what it was now but i sure remember his comment to me. He said ” all you Americans are alike. You want it now, you want it free and you want it how you want it. You should live in Poland for a while”.

I guarantee they make money by anyone of you just spending time on this site.
It’s not like these guys are taking second mortgages out so you can use this site.

The owner is a multi billion dollar corporation, they are not hurting for money. I’m sure Martin made a pretty penny selling it.

We make this site possible for them to become wealthy.
You people need to get that through your heads, we are the customer.

Your Apathy is appalling, Thank you for allowing me to make you millions, the marketing gurus are laughing their way to the Bank.

When Martin started this site I am sure he put some serious time and money into it and now I am sure he was rewarded for it. If you want to thank someone thank him.

If the site starts taking a turn for the worse then people will leave and then the company will loose money.
It is in your and their own interest to make them aware you are not satisfied and you want some changes.

The only thing working well is their advertisements.

“Free” sites like this need to be a two-way street – without us (“we the people” was a rather fine way of putting it), the site is nothing, and the deafening silence just seems to me to be deeply disrespectful to all those people that give their time and energy helping others on the site, and thereby making the site great, which is what generates revenue.

Also “Thank you for the free of charge website” is akin to saying “thank you for not kicking me in the balls today!”

Direct from the owner/founder of escalate media:

We have not found it difficult to monetize forums and feel there is as much potential with a forum community than any other type of website

Every time you see an ad, they make money. Every time you click an ad, they make more money. And it’s not just members here. Google anything woodworking related and you’ll likely get a lumberjocks link.

Also KnickKnack nailed it. It’s the people that make the forums great. The community, content and atmosphere dictate the success or failure.

Again from Lee Dodd:

Successful forum monetization involves growing a community to the point where it begins to expand on its own. In other words, it has to become large enough that is a brand on its own. If a community hits that breaking point,and starts to grow rapidly on its own as a function of both word-of-mouth and effective search engine optimization, than we know we have a real success on our hands.

It’s really a terrific business model and I wish I thought of it. Get a group of people to spend hours authoring all of your content, curating it, growing the community, and keeping it going for free. Then lead them to believe they are soooo privileged to be able to do all of these things for free while you make tons of cash

I travel on the highway where there are billboards. Driving gets me there.

I read the paper. I enjoy that.

I listen to the radio when I want to.

When I’m reading a menu, I look at the pictures too.

What I find the most disappointing is that no one from LumberJocks posts a message to explain what is happening. Who ever is in charge should inform the users and explain the situation. This indicates to me that the new owner is not focused on customer service. Hopefully this changes soon.
