Hi all I have a few questions about motors. When I got my Powermatic 50 for Xmas it came with a 3ph 1hp TEFC Marathon motor, magnetic switch and the seller threw in a 1ph 1hp Wagner compressor motor since I don’t have access to 3ph power. During the restoration process I muddled over just getting a paddle starter and a new 2hp motor to start with a clean slate and increase performance a bit. Well I pulled the trigger and picked them pup the other day so now I’m left with 2 motors and a mag switch. I figured I’d try and sell the stuff on CL to cover the costs of the new motor and paddle switch. Could anyone give me a decent ballpark price of what I should ask for them?

I was thinking
1hp 3ph TEFC motor – $100
3ph 1hp Mag starter – $50
1ph 1hp Wagner motor – $50

Package deal – $175

Let me know if I’m way to high or low I want to be more than reasonable but also leave a little room for haggeling without getting taken to the cleaners. In the end I just want to sell the stuff for an honest price to recoup the money I put in the restoration.

PS if anyone here is interested I’m in the Detroit, MI area.

I would say the 1 hp 3 phase motor has little to no value in a sale. There are many 3 phase motors out there to be had and are not in very high demand due to most folks having single phase. You can always list it and try and see if you get any calls but my guess is it would be a hard sale. The 3 phase 1 hp mag switch also has little to no value but you could at least try to list it on ebay since you would have a larger market for a potential sale. The single phase motor has some value but given it is a smaller motor at 1 hp it is likely worth around 25.00 in our area.

I concur with Jerry. Used single phase motors can be sold for
about $30 per hp, with 3hp and bigger ones being worth $100
or more.

Some magnetic starters like Allen Bradley are in demand because
they hold up better than new imported ones.

I’ll join the parade. The smaller motors in 3 phase just aren’t in demand. The Wagner motor is a compressor motor, which is also less valuable. I do think the switch may be worth something to the right buyer.

I agree that the motors have little value. You might spend some time sifting through your local Craig’s List to get an idea of what they can sell for.

The starter is maybe worth $25.00 to someone who knows what to do with it. A three phase magnetic starter is just a three pole relay with a single phase coil (one of the phases) so by using two of the poles it will work nicely as a single phase motor starter.
