I have decided that I really don’t like my Stanley 78 plane. I am looking for replacement suggestions (mainly for cutting rabbets).

Either the LV or the forthcoming LN fillister planes would be great, and I may end up with one of them, but initially I would like to look at less expensive alternatives, if such an animal exists.

Thanks

Sorry to hear of your breakup with the venerable #78. I can’t offer a suggestion re: alternative in that I get along with mine but I’d like to ask: what about it drove you to the brink?

Unfortunately (?) I have recently purchased a few new high end tools and I am beginning to really enjoy the precision of the setup process. It probably has to do with my advanced age and reduced tolerance for trial and error.

Wood shaving jamming is a big problem also.

Thanks for your response.

“Wood shaving jamming is a big problem…”

No argument there, Ray. I’ve done some amount of polishing on the cap of my #78 and that seemed to help some. But it’s something that has to be watched with each run and that’s a pain.

Congrats (condolences?) on moving to high-end tools, too. :-)

Cheap? Perhaps a wooden rabbet plane….
