Topic tags/keywords: jointer powermatic delta

I was very lucky yesterday and today I have two, that’s TWO, new 8” jointers sitting in my garage. I plan to keep one and sell the other. I’ve read the manufactuer’s specs as well as Amazon reviews but would like to hear from my LJ pals. I’d appreciate any input you may have from direct experience or trusted references.

If you were me, which would you keep and why?

Thanks for any input and a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year to all.

Steve

I don’t know model numbers off the top of my head, and I don’t feel like searching, so… I’d keep the Delta if it’s a DJ-20.

I own one myself, preferring the levered parallelogram mechanism over others I’ve owned. The mechanism never sticks or gets dirty.

I should have repeated the model numbers in the body of the post. They are Powermatic 60B and Delta 37-365X which is in the Delta DJ-20 family. :}

Don’t have or know about either but if one has a carbide spiral hear, I’d keep it.

I am with Thomas. I have the 6” version and it is a solid jointer. Wish I had gone with the 8” instead, though.

THe 60b has the standard design bed does it not? I could very tempted by the parallelogram design of the DJ20. However, my understanding is that the DJ-20’s that fall under the X-5 series had issues with quality. This is not from personal experience mind you just stuff I have read.

I’d keep the one that works best.

Why would you do anything else?

Well Skeezics, the fact is that I have two Powermatics and one Delta. I thought stating I had two was bad enough and didn’t want to rub in the fact that I was able to get three. All are new and I don’t want to run any of them (GaryK) to do comparison tests partly because I’m not that much of an expert and partly because I want to sell whatever two I don’t keep as “new”. Might not be direct from a store, but they still have the cosmoline or whatever rust preventative junk on them.

Thanks to this great family of sawdust fanatics for all your input – past and future.

I would be interested in hearing how Santa left you two jointers as well. I have had a Sawstop on my list for several years running and it seems that his sleigh with a lift gate just happens to be in the shop every Christmas. So it must have been up and running this year (at least in SC). :)

when santa was up on the shop roof christmas eve I saw all the iron hangin out the sleigh and I got the bright idea that if I was to shoot one of them reindeer he wouldnt be able to get airborn and would hafta leave some o that here. and it woulda worked BUT….. them reindeers is bullet proof! then the ol fat man looked me in the eye and said “one o them 8” jointers was going to be mine but since I tried to shoot ol donner [didnt know what one I was shootin at] I’m gonna deliver your jointer to someone else.” :-[ boy did I screw up! So being it was gonna be mine I will gladly pay shipping for you to send it back to me. hehehehe.

Skeez, you musta hit a bit back and low. Blitzen didn’t drop on your roof, and took a while, but that deer keeled over near me and Santa made an emergency landing. The big guy had to lighten his load – being that he had one less reindeer – and that’s how I got three. The PM 60B’s are for sale at $1,000 each. $800 off the lowest price I found on the net and hopefully will make someone happy. ;}
