I’m still looking for a cutter for a Sargent VBM plane. It’s the size equivalent of a Stanley #2 – I think that makes it a #7. The cutter currently in the plane is a Stanley (late type 11 logo) and it works, but it’s not original.

I’m not rich, but I do have tools to trade so if you have a #2 sized Sargent VBM Cutter please let me know.

I thank you, your country thanks you.
Joe.

Hey Joe,

If it helps, I think that I have a Stanley Number 2 blade that I’ll give you.

Greg – it’s already got a Stanley #2 blade in it. (And if you’ve got a spare you should sell it on fleabay, not give it away – because they aren’t cheap!).
I just want the Sargent VBM blade for it so I can return it to stock condition.

thanks
Joe

Joe, either a #7 or a #407 should work and would be the same cutter. They are pretty hard to come by. Good luck in your search.

Edit: There are several vintages of VBM cutters, so you’ll need to know the type if you want it original.

Don do you have a pic of what the logo would look like for a VBM versus any other Sargent?

Dave Heckel did a separate type study of the cutters, (pictures from here, http://www.sargent-planes.com/sargent-plane-type-study/)

I’m not sure why he did it this way, but the type of cutter doesn’t match the type of plane. You need to match the dates. For instance, both a type 4 plane typically carries a type 3 cutter.

I have a spread sheet here,

Thanks. It looks like I need the type 3 one. This could be a long search.

Thanks – the toolexchange is in Australia so the blade would only be about $27 with the exchange rate but postage would be more than the blade.

actually Joe, anything VBM is pretty common (as Sargents go). The 407 is like the #2 though, its a scarcer size, thus more expensive.

Just sent a text out to a friend who has a large inventory of parts back in Ohio. It may take a day or so for him to look so I’ll PM you if he come up with one…Blkcherry

Thanks, I appreciate the effort. I’ve got a shoebox full of blades but nothing even close to this one.

If you find two, I’ll take the second one.

It must be trend, having Stanley irons on Sargent 407 planes.
