I’ll probably take this thing apart to see if it’s a moving parts problem.

If anybody has any other suggestion I’d like to know.

To answer the question of whether a 5hp rotary phase converter
will start a 7.5 hp wide belt sander…. the answer is yes, it will
start it.

The motor is not starting consistently though. The contactor is
my main suspicion. Once I get that straightened out I’ll
be able to ascertain if I need to upgrade the phase converter.

You are asking a 5 hp converter to start a larger hp motor? Doesn’t sound like a good idea. The larger motor is drawing more amps than the converter can handle and the contacts will burn up.

Contacts may have been destroyed. Take it apart and see what it looks like.
