Just discovered that there will be a Shopsmith demo near me in the near future. I’m psyched, because I’ve never actually seen one…I just read lots of posts were people say they are terrible/they are great.

For anyone else who shares my curiosity, here is a link to their list of dates & places:

I’m setting up my first shop and am facing all kinds of challenges – budget, space, electricals. I spent all day yesterday working out my perfect jointer/planar combo, then woke up this morning and decided to heck with that, I’m going to use hand planes.

I’m not committed to the Shopsmith idea, but if there is anyone reading this who has some thoughts about a good dust collection set-up for a Shopsmith, and also whether or not I’ll want a stand-alone bandsaw, I’d like to hear from you. I’m not sure which models of Shopsmith include the bandsaw. I suspect that no matter how good it is, in the long run I’ll want a stand-alone unit with more resawing capability.

A friend of mine says the onlything better than a bandsaw is a second bandsaw – saves him having to change blades. So perhaps the small Shopsmith bandsaw would continue to be useful even after I add a 17”/19” unit to my shop.
