Hey everybody, quick tool purchasing advice needed. I found a guy with a shop fox 20” planer for sale on CL, he wants $1400 for it. Haven’t seen it but says its in like New condition. I’ve been on the hunt for a planer for awhile, and I’m not really in rush. That said, I would like to buy this machine, but my only problem is that grizzlys 20”planer is IDENTICAL to the shop fox, and sells for 1600 new, whereas true shop fox sells for 2800 new, both of those prices being for the machines with traditional cutterheads. So I guess my dilemma that I need advice on is, is that shop fox worth it at 1400 when I can go get an identical machine new for around the same price? Is $1400 a good price for that machine? Would you jump on it or let it slide?

You are correct, the only difference between those two machines is the color of the paint. If you can bargain a bit on the CL deal that may work for you.

I have the Grizzly 15” version of this machine with the spiral cutter head and it has been working well.

Well, offer him $1100 or $1200 and tell him to keep your
number if he takes a pass.

I see a lot of machines on Craigslist at unrealistic prices.

No point in paying a premium for capacity you
don’t really need.

I saw the same thing here in Ohio, on CL too, just can’t remember where, the thing was posted for $1500 and he reposted it like 20 times. Not worth it at $1400, at the $1100 – $1200 price point maybe.

The question is, “will the grizz or fox actually plane 20” of hardwood?” My Chinese version with the 5hp wouldn’t (or under protest with very light cuts). They come now with optional 7.5 or 10 hp.
