Topic tags/keywords: question

Does rosewood have a unique or strong aroma when cut? I bought some thins at a garage sale and the woodworker said it was rosewood. When I cut it, it reminds me of cocobolo.

Depends on the rosewood!
For example New Guinea rosewood has a nice distinct smell but not overpowering.

Brazilian rosewood has a distinct sweet smell—like roses. I suspect that’s how it got the name.

any other wood smell like cocobolo other then cocobolo ? The garage sale rosewood thins are dark, dense and heavy. About 8 inches wide, 48 inches long and 1/4 inch thick.
Below is a closeup of a piece.

Rosewood and cocobolo are in the same family (Dalbergia) of woods, so no surprise there.

No prob. Also, that is one interesting piece of wood, with that turquoise piece inset! Did you get a good price on that cocobolo? Last time I bought a thin, it was probably $80 a BF for the piece I bought. I don’t like buying from a boutique store, but where else can a guy buy that stuff? I sure don’t see it in garage sales around here!

summerfi, you are correct!

...and rosewood is probably my favorite wood, though tiger maple is a close second, with QSWO third.
