Topic tags/keywords: resource question

I know that we have a review section for equipment. But would it be to difficult or possible to put it into an organized fashion like a consumer report? My thought is that we get LOTS of forum topics on which is the best type of equipment to buy. Maybe if we had a section that just simply dedicated to types of equipment then they could just look there. Members could then simply post a new make and model if not already listed of give their reviews on ones that are already listed.

Just a thought.

Monte,

Great Idea. I just figured out how to use the Forum instead of the blog. LOL! When I want to know something I use the Search engine at top of the page on left side.

Have found interesting discussions I use to think about purchases. I also use the critiques on Amazon, especially the negative ones and look for repeatable negatives. It’s why I choose a Grizzly Air Filter over a Jet as the Jet AC’s were arriving with significant shipping or construction problems.

I’m not quite getting your idea. Reviews is where people should be discussing the different tools, which are sorted by category or brand.

We also have the gateways: http://lumberjocks.com/MsDebbieP/blog/24914
Maybe you are seeing headings in the gateways for “table saw talk” “bandsaw talk” etc ??

My thoughts were that they could go to review- table saw – and look up what model you’re interested in and see any LJs comments regarding that piece of equipment.

Currently, when you click on reviews, you can choose “table saws” and read the different reviews or you can choose “DeWalt” (for example) and then reviews of their products.
I guess the “Dewalt – table saws” is another sorting option

Ok, then I haven’t looked close enough. Maybe we should direct new members there somehow.

Monte, I hear what you’re saying. I think I said it myself not too long ago.

I had a thread the other day that mentioned reviews, and that was one of the comments that someone left. At the moment you can go to tablesaws, and then scroll through every single one until you find your tablesaw, or you can go to the brand and search every dewalt or delta until you find a tablesaw, but there is no way to drill on down – tablesaw (filters out everything else) delta (filters out all other brands) model #.
You can use the search tab for the entire site, but there isn’t an advanced tab that would filter out everything except the reviews, so if you search DW788 you get results for every forum thread, blog post, and review.

Gateways are interesting, but the name doesn’t describe what it does so that unbolded link at the bottom of the page, lower than most of scroll down to, just gets hidden at the bottom of the page, and if you do click on it you don’t see anything that mentions reviews. (And if you do find the reviews, you’re still stuck with the inability to cross-search, drill down to an exact model.)

I think the proliferation of “what do you think of tool XX?” posts is an indicator that maybe the reviews aren’t playing the role they could be. I don’t recall what the exact response was to my query, but I think it involved someone patting me on the head and telling me to go back to playing with my Legos…
(Which is not a problem. I do like my Legos.)

EDIT: I was typing my novel when Ms. Debbie replied with this: I guess the “Dewalt – table saws” is another sorting option
So there may be at least an understanding of the question now.
Thanks Ms. Debbie.

I’ve always used the search option when looking for a particular item and or reviews, though what I would like to see is more avenues created for woodworking projects such as a separation of them: Tables, Boxes / a bleed off with big and small boxes, Beds, Chairs, Misc, bandsaw boxes, bowels, etc…..

MsDebbie, thanks for all you do!

One very helpful thing would be the ability to sort search results (reviews, projects, etc) by date. If I am looking for a review on a certain saw. That model may have been around for a while. I am more interested in more recent reviews as products do evolve and get better(or worse) over time. Date and times are not displayed in the search results. that would be helpful, but the ability to sort, or show those from the last x weeks, x years, etc. would be awesome.

Blackie … have you tried going to the Projects page and clicking on the tag name in the left column? Does that help?

The tags are nice but they only go one deep. If I want to look for walnut beds and click on the bed tab I get beds. If I then click on walnut it erases the beds and gives me everything tagged with walnut.
