Topic tags/keywords: question

I want to build Mission style coffee table for my first bigger project and since it’s cheaper and easier to work with I would like to use Selected Pine. But I’m not sure is it good enough for table and would it be just a waist of time and material*.

There’s nothing wrong with building with “Selected Pine”. Work in what YOU are comfortable in. You’ll learn lots of things by building your first” bigger project” and you’ll have more confidence on your next project.
Don’t think of it as a waist of time, it’s a learning experience—Plus you just may end up with a wonderful table!

That select pine used on a well designed and constructed table has the potential to be around for a good two or three hundred years. I say its well worth it.

I build a pine chest 25 years ago and it still in the same shape as when I made it ( that is out of square and leaning to one side) but it as not moved.

Pine is not a taboo. Work with what you can afford and is available to you. I have a coffe table I built for our RV and I get compliments the same as the Mahogony Flatware chest. Go For It.

Hey bojan

select pane will work fine but the the area I live in I can buy ash for less than select pine and it’s a lot tougher than pine and closer in appearance after it has been stained to the white oak most mission style was built out of. Have fun with your project and be careful out there.

Something to keep in mind however is not just the species of wood but the type. Dimensional lumber has a MUCH higher moisture content that kiln or air dried common stock lumber. As the wood dries wt has a much higher likelyhood of warping or checking and splitting. Anything you buy should have some sort of a stamp or tag giving it’s moisture content and I would say you want to stay under 10% for any furniture applications. Good Luck

You need to find a good lumber supplier. You can find #1 oak for under $2.00 a board foot. That is not very much more that pine at big box store. Pine is not any easier to work with that oak. Nothing wrong with pine.

I have to agree with Dennis, there is nothing wrong with pine, but with a good lumber supplier you can do better than HD or Lowes. I can’t tell you were to find one in Vegas, but I know when I lived in Cedar City, Utah I would get my Lumber from St. George, (I’m going under the assumption you’ve at least heard of those places). So I can’t believe Vegas doesn’t have a supplier. Just find a cabinet shop, or a high school with a woodshop program, and ask them where they get their lumber.

It’s not mission furniture, but the wife liked it. Click for details!

Dennis is right on w.r.t cost -
If you are looking at pine from Lowes – you will find Oak from a lumber supplier at about 1/2 the price. Around here (i buy in Kansas City) Red Oak is 1.60/BF Surfaced 2 sides and straight line ripped.

At Lowes 1X6 pine 6 feet long is 8.99 so 3.oo/foot.

Go with what you have on hand, but at any of the big hardwood lumber places, you will find that (excluding figured woods and some real exotics) Your difference in cost of materials will be very small.
Actually even at the yard I go to Oak is the cheapest wood there. For a mission table – if there are through Mortise and tennon, the pine will be easier to work and get a tight fit

There is Austins on Sunset road – but I see complaints about pricing – but I bet it is still lower than a box store

Here is a thread reply on Las Vegas Sources – - I have “ZERO” idea if they are any good – but were recommended elsewhere:

“PASTED COMMENT”

I’ve found a few places I’ll tell you about, and I hope you’ll have some luck with them.

First is McKillican, up on the north side of town, sort of near the Craig/I-15 exit. They’re in a newer complex, it’s a little hard to find, but worth it. They used to be on Arrville, so if you see that address, it’s an old one. Their number is 702-365-6422. I don’t know if they only sell wholesale or not, you may have to wiggle your way into buying from them. They carry 6 mm and 18 mm Baltic Birch, as well as a few different shop grade plywoods. I recently purchased a product called Tuckernut, similar to a BB for about $31 for a 4×8 sheet. It’s a very good shop grade plywood for utility work.

My second recommendation would be Rugby, sort of near the airport. It’s a huge lumberyard/home improvement center. Once again, I am not sure if they’re a wholesale house only, but they have very nice prices and a good selection. Their number is 702-248-0050. It’s funny, I have no idea why more people don’t use them, their prices are much better than Austin’s prices.

Another place I would consider is National Wood Products, I can’t find their number right now, but it’s sort of off Polaris, by the airport, as well. I have purchased both plywood and lumber from them. Rugby has better prices, but National sometimes has obscure stuff you can’t find anywhere else. An example would be- I use an aromatic Cedar bottom in a chest that I build, and they had a Cedar plywood that I’ve never seen anywhere else. So if you’re looking for something unusual, they might carry it.

Last thing- I don’t know if this is a private question, or if it will be published on the All Expert’s web page. Because of that, I don’t want to say something that could come back to haunt me. But let me just say this- I agree with you about Austin. I don’t purchase anything from them anymore.

If these places don’t help with your plywood needs, write back and I’ll try to come up with a few more. But I think these three should do it. Also, I’ve found a couple of specialty places, like countertop companies and door companies, so I tend to outsource some things. I’ve found it’s cheaper to let someone else build certain parts of my projects.
