I was wondering if there is any advantage to using gum tape over blue tape in veneer work. I have used both during glue up with no difference. Though when I use the gum tape on smaller pieces they tend to swell and buckle. Any thoughts?

If you mean paper veneer tape, one major advantage is that it always comes off with water. Unless you are using very low tack masking tape you risk tearing out wood fibre when removing it after pressing. Pressing really increases the bond on all masking tapes.
Another reason is that veneer tape shrinks as it drys tightening the joint.
Another is that you can get away with leaving it on the glue side when you glue up. While not the best practice it won’t hurt you if you forget occasionally.
I still use a bit of masking tape occasionally but I’m careful not to press it.
I do a lot of small pieces and I know what you mean but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for me.
You may be getting your tape wetter than you need to. I use a tape machine with a roller for wetting veneer tape.

Shipwright pretty much said it all, but one thing I like is to use the perforated tape. Feels thinner and less moisture is needed for adherence. Also better visibility of pieces. I like how very little moisture is needed to remove tape. Have you checked out He has tons of tips and tutorials on working with veneers- I learned a lot from them.
