Topic tags/keywords: question

I am thinking about building a cabinet or cabinets for my mom’s kitchen. It is small with a window positioned in a bad spot. I think the house was built in the fifties.

I have included some pics. I would be replacing the table area between the fridge and the corner. The window is behind the curtain.

What do you think about a cabinet with an area above it for her small microwave? Width appears to be about five feet.
Looking for suggestions. If you have any projects, please post up.

Thanks. Still searching the inet for ideas. Your help and advice appreciated.

Mike, do bear in mind that for elderly people, and I’m talking from experience here, the microwave must be no higher than eye level to the display. That means no tiptoes in order to read the display and no raised arms to remove hot food.

Thanks Harry. I will definitely work that in as a priority. I need to talk to my sister and mom to get some ideas. Maybe a base cabinet with drawers with wall cabinet overhead.

MT….another possibility here. I’ve attached a picture (if I did it right!!) of an old Hoosier cabinet I picked up a couple of years ago. It was in really rough shape, so I stripped and refinished/repainted it. Something like it might fill the bill for your moms place. Hoosier cabinets (along with a few other brands) can be had pretty reasonably if you look around. I came across mine on Craigslist. And seems a Hoosier would go along nicely with moms kitchen table :o)

edit in;;; please excuse the messy & unfinished kitchen LOL

Mike, we had a neighbor growing up who remodeled his kitchen. The guy was recently divorced and a dry wall guy and those two things might explain a lot. He washed the window, hung a new, solid / opaque curtain and dry walled over the inside of the window. Somehow I don’t think your mom would go for that, LOL. I do wonder if you used an upper – lower curtain system if you could not block off the lower window section with a movable cabinet like a shortened version of the Hoosier shown above giving her a bit more cabinet and counter space.

Wow! Those are all good ideas…and not above my skill level.
I like Kevin’s sketch. That would be doable. And maybe something similar to the Hoosier cabinet to sit beside the fridge. I think my brother would spring for a new and bigger microwave.

I took a closer look today when I stopped by. I should be able to build a cabinet next to the stove that is about 10 inches wide. Three or four small drawers would be a big help for her cooking utensils.

From the corner of the room, it is 60 inches to the refrigerator. And about 48 from the corner to the stove. Not a lot of room. Somehow, room for a trash can has to be incorporated because there is no other floor space for one.

Still hoping to do some more planning this coming weekend.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I have developed a plan. I will let mom look at it and see if she approves. It consists of a 48 inch wide base cabinet with two banks of drawers for easy access. A laminated counter top should go along nicely with the rest of her kitchen. Lastly, a small cabinet will sit under the window to fill out the 60 inch space.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. And, like Harry suggested, the microwave can sit on the counter where it has been for several years. Mom isn’t getting any younger so I don’t want to build something she won’t use.

Here is my “plan”
