Dear New Site Owners,

Some of the other forums have sticky threads that are always up top of the list. They are usually full of the information that is asked for 2 dozen times a day – How do I do X, where can I find Z etc.
I think we could use some stickys here. I know scrollsaw blades – sizes and uses and where to buy – have been covered a few bajillion times. Having it all in one thread would be cool.
Knottscott might be persuaded to do a writeup on tablesaw blades.
Bandsaw tuneup and blades (what type to use, where to buy) with a link to the Snodgrass video would be helpful.

And maybe some sort of thread that just says “look in the review section you dumba$$” so we wouldn’t have the hourly “which snurrfl should I buy with my 37 cents?” threads. (there’s probably a nicer title for that thread, I’m just shooting from the hip here.).

Along the same line, we could have a page of quick links to the common threads like “Made in USA vs China vs Everyone Else” or “I Love/Hate Sawstop” or “Remember when they made REAL tools out of real metal (and we walked barefoot uphill 5 miles to the workshop and we enjoyed it.)”

And it’s not related, but is there any way to change the color of the left/right side margins? I’m hoping for something a bit more inviting than the current tan/orange that reminds me of something we’d find in a baby’s used diaper. Perhaps a nice wood-grain pattern, rotating on a daily basis. We could start on Monday with pine, and work our way up to the weekend with something fancy like sapelle. It would really spruce up the place.

Sincerely
Joe (No last name, Just Joe.)

Good idea joe. I particularly like the “I Love/Hate Sawstop” discussions. Always very entertaining.

So, who are the new owners? What happened to the old owners—were they set out to pasture or sent to the slaughterhouse?

Maybe I misread a different thread, but I thought the original site developer just moved on to bigger and better things last month to pursue other interests – something about naked-bacon frying or nose-hair bonsai or something. That’s why we had some minor hiccups as Ms. Debbie had to step up her game (I heard a rumor they’re making her work 80 hour weeks now.)

I thought you were advocating an Arts&Crafts forum, JJoe!

And, I’d agree, we really DO need a “Stickley Thread!!”

” (and we walked barefoot uphill 5 miles to the workshop and we enjoyed it.)”

JJ…. you forgot to mention the 5 mile walk up hill to get back home…barefoot, and in the snow

There are several things this thread could be spruced up with, like a button to make all the threads as “read” and a “new posts” button so it would only show the post the are new since the last time you were here. On all other forums I visit I have it set to bring up only the posts that were added since my last visit. I also don’t understand why you have to click on the Off Topic posts to preview them and see what they are about.

But, still a good forum and very workable as is.

Has the new owner “introduced” themselves or been “introduced?”

It’s probably a corporate owner that’s got nothing to do with woodworking. Just another profit and loss statement to someone.

I’m against this idea – if the threads you suggested became “sticky”, that’s the top couple of inches of the forum listing that either doesn’t interest me (no scroll saw, no tablesaw, Sawstop not available here), or isn’t useful to me – “where can I find”, “what type to use, where to buy” almost invariably isn’t applicable outside the US/Canada, rarely applies to Europe, and never, in the all the years I’ve been here, is of any use to someone living in Portugal – for example Titebond – great glue (I read, and read again, and again,...), but can’t get it here.
As it stands, I, on my large monitor, can see but 7 thread titles – I might now be down to one before I have to scroll to see the rest.

…any way to change the color of the left/right side margins
Change it if you will, but I have 15 windows open, many with multiple tabs, from sites all around the universe and this is one of the most stylish designs around. Of course, I have no children so I can’t really relate to your “vision” of these colours :-)

It’s probably a corporate owner that’s got nothing to do with woodworking. Just another profit and loss statement to someone.

The last eMag said it was owned by escalatemedia ...

”Escalate Media operates two companies, Womensforum Media Group and the Escalate Network. Womensforum Media Group is a leading digital marketing company focused in the women’s lifestyle category.

Currently, Womensforum Media Group is working with Fortune 500 brands through custom integrated media programs.

Escalate Media also operates Escalate Network. The Escalate Network is reaching the fastest growing and most influential audience on the internet today: Women. The Escalate Network is a leader in pay-for-performance campaigns for lead generation, customer acquisition, coupon, brand loyalty, and social media campaigns reaching over 10 million parents a month.”

You decide.

Reviews would be more useful if they were sortable or better organized.

On the one hand this forum has a handsome user interface that is head and shoulders above most other woodworking sites but that isn’t saying much; it is missing many key features and in that respect is very dated. It really needs a way to track new posts so that even if a thread isn’t bookmarked I can still click something and go to unread posts. And of course the video option needs to be put back; personally I doubt it’s removal had anything to do with spam, removing it just saved bandwidth which saves money. LJ needs a quote option. And I think it would nice if clicking a link opened a new window just like every other website. Keep the off-topics hidden, I don’t come here to read Mr.Blowhard’s opinions given to him from forwarded emails that he never bothers to question.

Sticky threads are probably a good idea so long as we don’t have too many. One or two per subforum would be plenty.

I think Joe may be referring to the fact Martin Sojka left and someone else took over. Its in the last emag, but the list of emag only goes to 2011, so I had to go to MsDebbies home page and find it, http://mad.ly/0a9724

But I don’t want to speak for Joe, he has a much more entertaining way of communications. It always make me smile, the cry, then wonder which was appropriate.

excerpt
Martin Sojka, founder of our wonderful community, has moved on to other things. It seems strange to think of LumberJocks (and GardenTenders and HomeRefurbers) without thinking of Martin behind the scenes editing, fixing, helping, and devising new tools for the members. But that is life – things change. I will miss our weekly planning meetings, but I wish Martin well in his new ventures.

And I agree with Joe’s comments and suggestions for site improvements. I’d still like to see the thread heading follow to the first new.

Women’sforum media group? JustJoe This might explain certain editing in recent threads of pics you posted??

To address your original idea: I learn something and am entertained in every single new SS thread… very little about the topic, but plenty in the conversation. I find this true of all the menutia threads to some degree. Keep them.. they are easy to surf through. I have been put off in other forums by a “search before posting” trigger. This forum seems to be as much about conversing on the subject as finding answers about… and I like that a lot more than the forums that are weighted much more towards just answering.

Joe, I always enjoy your entertaining posts!

I still find LJs to be the most user friendly site I have visited so would be reluctant to change anything.

I do realize that us old guys are always against change!
