A friend gave me an old wooden hand brace. I can’t find any identification on it but would like to get an approximate date of manufacture and see if I can find an auger that will fit it. It’s about 14” long, all wood except the brass “chuck” (no inlaid brass segments around the handle), and will accept a 3/8 sq. tapered bit. Inside the chuck there is a tab and a button on the outsde but it does not seem to want to move. I have put a little light oil in and am hopeing it will loosen up. Any ideas of how to date it or where to find a bit? I have a few bits that will fit but they are not notched for the tab. Can I notch one of the bits I have and if so how? I don’t intend to use it but would like to hang it in my shop. Thanks for any input.

It sounds like you’re describing an old bit brace:

You can notch a regular auger bit end to make it fit.
As for age/ID/value, a vague description of 14”, all wood with brass chuck. will get you a vague answer like “it’s old, worth about $2-$2000” They were made for too long, by too many people/companies to even begin to guess without at least pics.

Ok, guys, this is my first forum experience and I’m an old geezer with very little computer experience. But, my eldest son, the IT/tech support professional is home for Christmas and loaded these photos for me. So – now- anyone have any idea how old it might be?
