Hey Gents…

I have about 400 BF of rough cut Ash, most is 4/4, I plan to turn into base and window trim. So, I’ve been thinking of getting a Shelix cutter head for my Dewalt 735. I’ve read a few reviews about the cutter and seems those who have purchased one are overall pretty impressed with it. Price from Shelix is $445.00 so not at all a cheap investment. But I think that may include shipping.

Are there other sources to get the cutter where the price might be a bit lower? I’m in central NY State (near Syracuse), if it matters.

Thanks!!

I bought mine from Global Tooling. ($402) and it arrived in a few days. No problems.

Edit – it is the Shelix brand, even though they don’t state that on the site.

Bert – think I read that Accu-head is HSS. That right?

And yes, reviews I’ve read do seem to be mixed.

Accu-head comes on the Steel City planers. They feature straight facing HSS cutters (not shear cutting). The reviews with the standard HSS inserts say that tearout is still a problem in figured woods. Amana makes carbide cutter inserts for the Accu-head, which would help hold a sharp edge longer. The Accu-head cutters are two-sided, where the Shelix has 4 sharp edges. Something to factor in I suppose.
I still think the helical type cutters (like Shelix brand) will prove to be the best for figured wood over the long haul.

Initially HSS is sharper then Carbide but it does not keep its edge as long.

Functionally, for planer blades anyways, I don’t see any advantage to high speed steel.
Imagine going back to plain steel blades on your tablesaw.

I know someone that has a Shelix. The only problem that he has had was in replacing or turning an insert. Use a still toothbrush to make sure there is not debris under the insert.

bbc – I don’t remember what the shipping was, sorry.

But I milled up some Curly Maple with the Shelix head with no tear out. These boards were run at high speed (I forgot to flip the switch) but it didn’t matter, they work equally well on Birdseye…...

JL – When I get time I’ll get in touch with Global and check on shipping charges. Prolly have to wait until after Christmas anyways, but looking at that pile of Ash I’m think’n a Shilex sure would be a nice addition!! :o)

Thanks much for the replies and info everyone.
