I’ve been working on a couple trinkets for family in the shop. But I’m not gonna be making a lot of extra stuff!
Last year I made a whole bunch of really cool gifts out of expensive wood and passed them out to friends.

I didn’t get a single thank you!

I know, I know….it’s about the giving not the getting. Well I call BS! I spent a ton of time on those gifts and at least an acknowledgment would have been nice!

That’s my seasonsal rant…now back to your regularly scheduled bitching.

Interesting post, Biff. It’s a topic I’ve been thinking about for several months – our motivations for doing what we do. In fact, I changed my signature several weeks ago to what it is currently to reflect some of the internal “wrestling” I was doing.

In my town there is a “secret families” program where, this year, $100,000 was spent on Christmas trees and presents for various families (a couple of hundred families), delivered to their homes. My wife and I were being recruited to help as shoppers or wrappers or deliverers. The emphasis was on how good it would make us feel rather than on how good it would make the families feel, and that got me thinking about our motivations.

Anyway, it seems like you know yourself pretty well and are comfortable with it. I like that.

Thanks guys! I really am not one of those people that expects a thank you for every little thing. I’m a giver….but I guess it just hurt a little. Non-woodworkers probably don’t appreciate handmade gifts as much because they have no idea how much labor and love goes into even a simple project.

I’ll get over it and get back in the seasonal swing. It’s just that Christmas has become such a stress-fest where people just freak out because they don’t have the time or money to buy everybody the latest and greatest. Sigh.
