Lots of you must have a story of a great find when it comes to the wood we all work with. I’ve run in to a few over the past few decades including one today. Went to a local hardwood supplier for his end of year clearance sale, and came home with this piece of quarter sawn white oak. Will stick this back and wait for the right project

Didn’t answer my phone one day and missed a chance at more than 100 BF of amazing 8/4 cherry for $1 a BF.

I’ve gotten a lot of random wood for free or nearly free. I keep hoping the right project will come along and I’ll be able to use it. Every once in a while it does happen and makes me feel great that I have just the right wood for the project. More often than not, my stock pile grows and takes up more and more room. Some of it’s nice, some of it’s little more than firewood. I need to reorganize my shop an a lot of it is going away, one way or another!

Had a wind storm here about 10 days ago so I took a horseback ride through the rainforest and spotted a new clearing. Big old tree fell and was hollow in the center. Upon a closer look it turned out to be a Laurel Negro.Cordia alliodora.
You merkins know it as Bocote. I’ll let it lay until after the upcoming dry season and get my buddies oxen to drag the trunks out. It’s about 48” across and 100 feet long(tall).

-- What day is it ? No matter. Ummmm What month is it ? No moron. I paid for a 2 x 6. That means Two inches by six inches. I want the rest of my wood.

I was able to get on several occasions over 100 boards of rift cut old growth pine. 16’ long x 8” wide x 1” at $10/board. (not bdf, lol) Here are a few of the projects I completed with this wood. In addition, I’ve made enormous amount of wood flooring with it.

I found some very figured boards in a stack of walnut I bought off of craigslist from someone. Used some in the top of my coffee table:

Back in CT I had a local sawyer that gave me a bunch of 8/4 Cherry that were 8”+ wide and 8’ long at $2/bdft.
