David Rees' How to Sharpen Pencils video, it’s a gem!

It’s a little long but give it time.

I searched LJ’s figuring someone had already posted a link to this but didn’t didn’t find anything so apologies if this has already been seen around here. Steve Ramsey posted a link to this video on Facebook yesterday.

I see that his ‘Artisanal Pencil Sharpening’ book is sold out and has a few reviews here on LJ’s, but he has a new book How to Sharpen Pencils

Hope you enjoy!

His video was halting and stuttering, so I skipped it.

Gus, on the bottom right of the video it says HD, if you click on it that will turn off the HD quality and it will play smoother and wont take as long to buffer…. Or get a better computer.

Meh, I usually like that type of humor, but this one just didn’t do it for me.

Life’s too short man! And, why does he need such a huge bench to sharpen pencils…...?!

Geez fellas lighten up! Bunch of grumpy asses around here. It’s obviously not serious, guess it’s not for everyone.

His best line comes at about 7:20 when he starts sanding the graphite.

Well executed tongue in cheek video short in the spirit of Zen and the Art of Pencil Sharpening.

I lost 15 IQ points watching that video, and only watched less than 2 minutes of it. I’m usually good for oddball humor and especially some good satire & parody, but that video was painful.

so THAT was what I’ve been doing wrong all these years. I never did FULLY rotate the pencil between two hands 360 degrees while inspecting the graphite. And always used a Wu-Tang tshirt. I shall fix both of these discrepancies to further master the art of sharpening a pencil

It was filmed at Roy Underhill’s Woodwrights School. For those who couldn’t get through it.
