I have no idea if this is the appropriate forum, but here goes. I need something to sand the inside of small bowls I make using a bowl cutting router bit. I need something 2” or so and I’ve seen them online – a shaft that fits into a drill, a soft pad on the end that sandpaper attaches to. Somewhere I saw instructions on how to make on DIY but I can’t seem to locate them again. Barring that, I’d appreciate what these are called so I might find them again online. Thanks.

Sounds like what you want is a dremel tool with a flex shaft attachment. Amazon is running a sale on dremel stuff right now so you might want to check them out. All kinds of little sanding and grinding bits are available for the dremel tools. You might be able to drive a dremel flex shaft accessory with a drill, but only if your drill has variable speed, than again, not sure how well that work.

Are you thinking about a ball sander like this?

Sorry for the delay in getting back on this. Thanks for the replies guys! What I’m trying to describe – horribly inadequately it seems – is something with a flat foam base with a metal shaft that is held by the drill. Ideally the foam base has hook and loop for holding sandpaper.

Something like this, but smaller?

Edit: Maybe like this? Lowes sells these for surface finishing of metal too but I guess you could buy regular hook-loop pads and cut them down to fit.

Edit again: Or you could just get this one, it’s even got lathe in the title.
