A lot of you guys salvage all kinds of wood and reuse it to build some very nice projects. My wife and I are having the countertops in our kitchen replaced with granite. When at the “granite store” I saw this box that had a few pieces of Italian tile in it. Asked the salesman if I could have it and he said yes. I’m guessing since the tile came from Italy the box must have been made in Italy. White, very dry and stable. Can’t guess what it is but it’s hard. Here’s some pictures of it being processed into useable wood. I plan on making a box. You know the old saying about dust to dust and box to box…

Now I have eight pieces of wood that have sides that are flat, square and parallel. I’ll start building the “new Italian” box tomorrow. The pieces ended up being 13”x3.5”x3/8”

It is pretty cool seeing the process from box to ready to use lumber. Nice!

An interesting read even if it doesn’t help you identify your wood.

It looks a lot like some beech I’ve been working with, but the beech is fairly soft, so that can’t be it.

Where are all the Italian lumberjocks to tell us what native species it might be?

Thought it was time to provide an update to this thread. I am building a box out of the salvaged wood. I didn’t start as soon as I said I would but better late…
Anyway, here is a progress pic. I still have the hinges, inside lining and outside finish to complete. I’ll post the finished box in the project section. I used walnut for the top and accents.
