Topic tags/keywords: question oak cedar

I am interested in building a patio cart similar to one that Woodsmith Shop has plans for in episode 610.

They are recommending to use an oil finish (BLO, tung etc) and not to use a film type finish. What are your thoughts?

As an alternative I am thinking about building this cart out of cypress which might not need finishing at all. I think that cedar is far too soft for this application, and redwood is unavailable in my area.

Cypress is also a soft wood (if that even matters). An oil finish will be easily renewed, and will have to be just that every so often.
Sand the project well, then apply Watco Danish oil (color of your choosing). 2 to 3 coats, and you’re good to go.

For projects like this I like to use Cabots Timber Oil.
