Topic tags/keywords: first timer

Hello all,

I found the following picture and would love to re-create the desk and bench in my own home. But, I have no experience with woodworking so I have so many questions.

I guess the main thing I’d like to find out how big of an undertaking this might be? Would any of you recommend this project for a first timer? It seems to me like a fairly straight forward design (though the space I have is smaller so the width for my items would be probably somewhere around 1/2 to 3/4 the widths in the picture).

Also, any recommendations on what types of wood would work best for this and what tools would be required?

This depends largely on what tools you already have, I could suggest a wide variety of tools that would make this easier or you can give us a list of what you already own and you can work with that. The desk looks fairly straight forward and the joinery can be done with either very easy methods (although they may not look as pretty) or harder methods which for a beginner may be difficult.
