I’m drawing up a mockup for my plane till I’d like to build. I was thinking about incorporating a hinge on the panel the planes rest on as to not waste an space. I estimate the weight to be at least 60lbs. 3 #8’s, 2/3 #7’s and 2 #6s. I figure i can use the space behind it for smaller planes and scrapers and such.

Anyone done this before?

Man you’ve got a lot of big iron to hang. Getting ready to build a cabinet for my planes, although I wasn’t thinking about a hinge, I’ve seen this before. Here's one from Sawmill Creek:

Yeah i do.

Few block planes, rabbet plane, #12 scraper, #80….Wanna pack em in there. Plus have room for more when i get them. I may not have all of them on there, but I’d like to have some storage for them. I’m using pegboard with string now and i don’t like it.

Thinking about incorporating some of them gas springs they use on vehicles to assist with lifting.

Hmmm, sounds like you need to get rid of a couple of planes…lol
I would suggest a piano hinge if it can fit.

In all reality i don’t need all the extras. but they’re so cool! I just bought 2 more #8’s on ebay. Only wanted one but it was a package deal so hey why not.

Bought a nice #7 a month ago cause one i had purchased previously needs a repair. Literally a week to the day after, a co-worker says “hey you still interested in them bailey planes? I have a #7” DOH. Paid $75 for the first and $45 for his.

I figure at least 2 of each is good, that way if 1 needs a sharpening i can keep going.

I was thinking a piano hinge at the top, and some gas springs for assistance. I wasn’t sure if maybe there was a specialized hinge for this type of application.

Have your say...
