I bought this sweet spokeshave at a Lie-Nielsen hand tool event today:
I've been trying to use a super cheap Chinese one before this with no luck. The Boggs takes incredibly fine shavings and leaves a beautiful planed surface with no chatter. I tried out all of their shaves and liked this style the best… bought the curved one there and ordered a flat one (they were out of stock at the show). I tried it on some cottonwood scrap:
It make subtle curves beautifully, even when rounding edges with the curved shave (a little backwards, but I don't have the flat one yet). Setting it up is a lot easier than I thought without having any depth adjuster… just put it on something flat, put finger pressure on the blade, and tighten it up. Someday I might get the concave shave as well, though it looks super tricky to sharpen.
