So my birthday and Christmas are 2 days apart and my wife always let’s me get a big thing or a couple of medium things. I really wanted a premium low angle jack plane by either LV or LN. But I started to think that maybe I should go with the stanley sweetheart LA jack and then get some other goodies as we’ll. I have been wanting a nice saw for cutting small to medium stock, also a new miter gauge for my table saw. As far as saws go, was looking for some suggestions, I saw the veritas saws and they do look quite nice. The miter gauge just has to be able to take an auxiliary fence as most do and be sturdy. Thanks for any input.

My choice would be to go with LN and work on the other items on your list the next time you have a gift coming or a little extra jing in your pocket. On one hand the LN are really expensive, but on the other hand, when you experience that level of quality and craftsmanship in a tool, it is a great value.

I’d probably not go for the miter gauge because it’s a simple enough task to make several sleds for the tablesaw. The sled provides much superior stock support than any miter gauge which is nice. The saws and hand planes on the other hand, take much more time and skill to make on your own so it’s good when someone buys one for you.

From the reviews I’ve read the Stanley sweetheart reissues are not remotely in the ballpark of the LN and LV planes. If it were in the budget, I’d go with the premium planes.

+1 for the premium planes.

LN for the win.

Premium plane it is. Now I just have to figure out which low angle jack I’m going to get, the LV or LN.

Have your say...
