Does anyone know the purpose of the little brass end on this antique folding ruler?

It looks like a hinge for the next length with the wood missing.

Is is part of the hinge for the rest of ruler. Some older rulers folded out to 36+ inches

Duh!!!! I hadn’t even noticed the numbers on the opposite side were 13 to 24! Thanks guys!!! I had a blonde girl moment! Thanks for the help!
