I really like this wood, I think its beautiful, and it hand planes so nice. I have been salvaging this wood from old kitchen cabinets and such that were built 50 to perhaps 100 yrs ago. Some of this wood is 12” wide with no knots in any of it. I found this wood ideal for guitar speaker cabinets, mostly to tame the spiky sound that can happen with the Lansing speakers from days of old. I think its nice for other projects also.

I like it too. Nice spruce, so clean and creamy. I’ll just wax it
to keep the color from shifting sometimes. In Japan, at the
temples, the carpenters don’t finish the trim because it’s
all hand planed and it resists dirt pretty well when hand planed
well, but it gets dinged up and they go fix it with the plane.

The narrow piece that the plane is sitting on, the dark area was exposed to the air and unpainted, where the lighter area was painted.
The wood will take on that “patina” about 1/16” depth in 50yrs.
Wax is good, on the speaker cabinets, I like to use True Oil to protect the wood from those that want to set a beer on it.
I also found that scraping the wood instead sanding it, brings out amazing color and depth.
