Planer, Jointer/Planer??

Hi all,
Well, first I have some fantastic news. I finally saved enough money to buy a new table saw, and I decided to go with the Sawstop contractors model. I was really impressed with it's quality and also with the safety features. I really do love my fingers and thumbs! :)

Recently I purchased a used 6 1/2 craftsman jointer/planer for $100. It's in like new condition. I now have the opportunity to buy a barely used Dewalt 13" portable planer, side tables and stand for $295.00. The knives are new and I can't find anything wrong with it.

Do I need both a jointer/planer and a regular planer? Don't forget, I'm only a year into this wonderful art of woodworking.

TIA!!

DO IT!!!!!! It's a great deal. Yes you need both. Think about it, cutting boards (the hot item right now), most are more than 6inches wide. I glue mine up 9-10 inches wide and then run them thru my planer. Saves tons of time and shoulder pain.

I currently have both and find myself using them both frequently because I buy all my stock in the ruff sawn state and mill it my self. They are a great complement to each other for this purpose. So I guess the short answer to you question would be if the planer is in good condition I would go for it but first I would compae the price difference in a new to the used one.

I have looked at the Sears product but I am not really familiar with it but to me it really appears to be a 6" jointer. To add the term planer to it is somewhat misleading, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong you can thickness material on a jointer but that really is not its primary purpose. A jointert is designed to produce a flat surface but a thickness planer is designed to produce a parallel surface. In my opinion you need both a planer and a jointer. So I would suggest that you buy the Dewalt planer and use the Craftsman product as a jointer.

yes you need both!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a jointer only joints it does not plane. it will get one side flat and one edge square but you need the planer to get the other side parallel. really you don't need a jointer. you can use a sled and joint one face on a planer. but a jointer will get it flat but not parallel and thats ultimately what you want. go for the planer. you can use a sled to mill larger boards too.

SIGH

Well, sorry it took so long for me to get back to you all, and I really appreciate the responses. My computer crashed and it took me 2 days to get it back.

Well, I called the guy and said I would buy it, and left right away for his house, and by the time I got there he sold it to someone else! I was pretty bummed and peeved.

So, now I have to ask, if I am going to buy a NEW portable planer, should I still stick with the Dewalt?

teenagewoodworker has a point. If you can get something that does the job and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, go for it. One thing I do not like about the DW 735 is that there is no parts list or diagram with it. There's not that many parts to the thing, but if you did have to try to replace something, you'd have to take it back to where you bought it. I've seen lots of good things about the Delta planers, as well as the Grizzly products. I've got a lot of Grizzly tools, but you do have to take into account how much you have to pay for shipping.

Ok, I've narrowed it down to two. Now I really need some advice.

The first is the Dewalt, DW735R but by the time you add a stand and the side tables, it is $756.43.

The second is the Grizzly 15 This is $795 and I think I can get free shipping.

So, which would you get since they are basically the same price? :) TIA!!!

sorry you missed it.. when i 1st read the post i was concerned that if you waited for a response you might miss the deal.. maybe you'll find another.. i was going to add that i would not want to do with out my dewalt planner.. i use my jointer more often.. when i buy rough lumber, the dewalt goes to work and makes a ton of sawdust..
