Topic tags/keywords: marquetry veneers veneers for sale marquetry veneers exotic veneers

Just came across a 40 year or so collection of veneers that a gentleman was using for marquetry work and for instrument building.

It’s more veneer than I will ever use in a lifetime, but I just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to pick through it. Figured I could turn around and sell most of it for what I paid via Craigslist. But I thought I’d offer some of the nicer stuff up to my LJs buddies before I go that route.

It will take me awhile to get everything half-way organized and identified, but here is “Lot 1, Exotics” I realize that some of these aren’t exotic…..but most of theses I’ve never heard of before…and the ones that are domestic are either really pretty or real wide. Most of them are flat, some of them are a little warped, but nothing a little veneer conditioner won’t handle. I believe every piece in this lot is usable.

I’d like to get $75 plus shipping out of this, feel free to offer more, or tell me you think I’m crazy, but here are a bunch of pics and sizes I snapped yesterday.

Some of the pieces have had small pieces cut out of them, so all of the dimensions are of the narrowest point, even though they may be longer or wider at certain points…. or of the smallest piece of there are multiple pieces.

This would be a great score for anyone who does marquetry, or maybe small box making. I have a ton more. There is another box full of unlabeled pieces, two boxes of shorter pieces and scraps, a box of all different color dyed veneers, a box of wide mahogany veneers, and 3 boxes of patterns, templates, and other marquetry goodies. Like I said, a solid 40 year collection. PM me if you’re interested in any of this

OK You have my interest. I do marquetry.
How thick is it?
Is it all the same thickness?
Are there consecutive pieces? (sequenced)

Paul,
The thickness of all of this stuff is pretty consistent, if I had to guess, I’d say 1/42nd. There are some thicker and thinner pieces here and there but the whole lot of stuff is about the same.

There is some sequenced matched stuff in here, but nothing exceptionally rare (walnut, some really wide mahogany, and there’s some birdseye stuff in here that’s not maple, but light in color, almost looks like Ash.)

But there is a ton of stuff here that would be great for marquetry, and not much else. Lots of colors and textures.

I have another fellow who’s interested, and I promised him some more pics when I get home tonight. I can send them to you if he decides he’s not interested. PM me your E-mail if you want.

And I also just want to say thank you, I have read quite a few of your blogs in the past, and think I have a couple of your projects in my favorites list, and just want you to know I appreciate all you have contributed to the woodworking research library that is LJs.

Thanks for getting back to me Lucas. I actually have a quite a lot of thin veneer. I was hoping that if it was old there might be some thicker stuff (1/28 or even 1/32) .
