I was playing around learning about UPC codes this morning and then doing the business books this evening when I noticed the numbers on my Home Depot receipt looked like the numbers that the UPC bar codes are based on.
On a whim I went to the Home Depot site and entered a code in the search box.
Sure enough, it pulled up the item.
I don’t know how far back it works, I would assume as long as the item is in stock from the same supplier.

And since I was on a roll on another whim I put “UPC 022000159540” into a bare Google search window.
I’ll let the adventurous of you figure out what it is. Hint, it’s longer lasting (no, it isn’t vulgar.)

Not sure if it works on other sites, but I do more shopping at Home Depot, so it works for me.

Long lasting gum!

About 25 years ago, or so, I did quite a bit of work with UPC laser scanners and it was very interesting as to how many different codes are readily available and how smart these reader can be to decipher the code type by themselves. I designed a scanner interface for a PLC to sort rolls of carpet in a distribution facility.

The “Yes” album titled “90125”, (my favorite), is the number from the albums UPC.
