Topic tags/keywords: walnut question finishing

What’s the best way to “temporarily” bring-out the grain in a piece of sanded Walnut without worrying about how it will be finished later?

A wipe of Naptha works for me.

Mineral spirits works fine, too.

I just wipe it with a damp (but not too wet) cloth.

Bought a can of denatured alcohol the other day for comparison purposes. It might be good for cleaning and preparing the wood for a finish but it dries too quick for me. I prefer to enjoy the highlighted grain a while longer.

I like to use water, alcohol and such can dry the wood a bit but then it takes longer to evaporate

In a pinch, I’ll use “tongue oil”, aka spit.<grin>
It dries slow, is organic and it’s a renewable resource.

Randy, I like the way you think. Great response. Is that what they call thinking outside the box?
