Hoping someone could describe what is going on with my Sapele board. I purchased some 4/4 Sapele and after having it milled I discovered these large markings on one of the boards. At first I thought they may be water spots/damage. But then I realized it is a mirror image of the markings on both sides of the boards. What are my solutions if any to removing the marks or lessening them?

I was thinking oxalic acid (to break up tannin staining) but when I realized that the marks were on both sides I don’t think this is a good approach. I don’t think water would have soaked through both sides, and make mirror image markings on both sides.

This board is just 1 of 4 to be used as a table top. It’s the only one with the markings.

It’s definitely some kind of stain. I came across something like that once in a number of boards that we were running in the shop I work in. On the boards we had it was stained all the way through and we wound up sending it all back. I think your best option would be to exchange it for another board, if they’ll take it back after machining.
