Consider this: $100B was spent on gift cards last year, and roughly $8B was lost/unclaimed.

I hope we don’t have to bail these out too!

p.s. Mot, those piercings must be pure hell under your spidy man outfit!

Thanks, Bob! It pays to be informed. Here’s some more info about this list:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/storeclosings.asp
Snopes classifies this list as a “Mixture of accurate, inaccurate, and outdated information.”

Remember that Chapter 11 is Bankruptcy Protection, which means the company is making court-supervised changes in order to avoid bankruptcy. Most companies “come out” of Chapter 11 leaner and profitable. Chapter 7 is actual Bankruptcy and means that the company is gone.

I would agree Peter.
Most of the information today is at best “outdated”

Seems the platform changes every few minutes.

This was on the news last night. It is NOT accurate. If you are not sure, call the store. Chances are, everything is fine.

Berta.
The newest link I have right now is posted above your summation.
Is that the one you feel is not Accurate?
It’s seems like a fairly reputable source.

It is true that some stores are closing. But, in the case of Circuit City, for one, not the whole chain just some stores. Any gift cards will still be accepted at their other stores or on line. All I am saying is to check out the individual store you have concerns about before spending just to use up the gift card. If you purchase gift cards for gifts, use large chains like Wallmart, Target, etc, or a Master Card or Visa gift card. Just check it out before spending, don’t panic.

Thanks Berta:

Like the rest or us I can only brng the news that they let us know.

I would still like folks to give $ instead of Giift cards.

$8 Billion in lost sentiment last year is not a laughing matter ro many well meaning people.

Cheers

CC is still operating. They just closed their old unprofitable store locations that had unfavorable lease terms. Thats the only one I know about.

On a side note, I’ve never really understood the theory behind gift cards (unless you get a discount to purchase them). Essentially, you are taking something that can be used anywhere (cash) and turning into something that can only be used in one place. You are ALWAYS reducing the value of your hard earned dollars (for proof, see ebay sales of gift cards). If the recipient was really going to use it at the location of the gift card anyway, why not give them cash and let them use that there? I know I’ll probably get a few comments saying that I’m missing the point and that its the thought that counts, but this is how I feel.

Bob, sorry if I’m hijacking your thread. That isn’t my intention.

Edit: Bob, Looks like you posted just as I started typing. I’m with you on this one. $ over gift cards anyday.

If this thread helps then it’s a good thing!

Great, let’s further cause the economy to recess by heeding an internet chain letter. In case we have forgotten, there is quite a bit of evidence (real evidence not this nonsense based on a forwarded email) that the economy starts at the bottom and that consumer spending (especially during the holidays) can and does spur growth. It seems the government believes it too, hence your stimulus packages….

The only thing you will help by starting this thread is being part of yet another scam…..

Hokie, as for the purpose of gift cards, I used to think the same thing, then I realized that there are several reasons for them. They prevent kids from buying cigarettes or drugs :) That’s a bit crazy and exaggerated, but you get the point :) They also prevent adults from being responsible for a little while and actually get something for themselves…Its hard to pay rent or buy gas with a Best Buy card! So, don’t give cash, force the ones you love into doing something for themselves….get a gift card! Just don’t buy them from places with those stupid fees….

What next Bob….

Caver, You are probably not interested as you seem to have your own philosophy on everything but this information was carried on several dozen reputable new sources including the New York times and more recently this one
Unlike you I don’t try to crap on the information and the posters if what they write is not suitable to my needs, I simply report information as it stands and let folks make up their own minds.

It’s called conversation.

That’s what’s next Caver.
