Topic tags/keywords: lighting shop

In my basement workshop my ceilings are 80” from floor to the bottom of the ceiling joists. The shop is 400 sq ft.

I am trying to find a lighting solution that will not extend below the joists very much if at all. It would also need to be “armored” against things moving around, and allow a little bit of room for soundproofing between to top of the light fixture and bottom of the floor.

Do they make T8 fluorescent fixtures that are designed to sit between joists? I could use the “bare” cheap shop light style fixtures, but would need to invent my own protective cover.

I am not so much concerned about cost as I am it fits the requirements above, so specialty products are ok.

These are for “drop” ceilings, but I suspect they could be adapted. I think I would use the cheap shop lights and screw a piece of hardware cloth over them (from joist to joist) with some fender washers. if you really want to be fancy make a frame for the hardware cloth . . .

I don’t think troffer lights can be covered, can they? If they have material on top of them will they overheat?

The metal grid idea is intriguing.

I used cheap shop lights between the beams then built a wood frame and picked up some 2X4 lens from homedespot and cut them to fit.

some can be covered some can’t. may need to check with mfg. if you have room can build a drywall box with 3” clearance to top of fixture and insulate above that, (afaik) for sound proofing several layers of sheet rock glued on might be an answer or some of the lead sheets ($!) used to stop rattles in boom boom cars
If you are thinking of putting in a ceiling the borg has a track ($ as I recall) that fastens to the joists and allows the panels to be snapped in place. if you use reg track you will loose a couple inches at least
