Topic tags/keywords: question

It’s been a looooooooooong time since they disabled video embedding. Spammers were using it, and we all hate spam. But you know what I hate even more? Not being able to watch video here.

This site is run by a company, not a guy in a basement on a Packard Bell somewhere. You’d think the problem could be fixed in at least a month’s time, wouldn’t you? I RARELY complain about anything here, in fact I can’t remember the last time I did. And I have always stuck up for this site, even done a great deal behind the scenes to help promote it. But this is getting a little tiring.

How about letting us embed as usual while you set up the new code, if it’s going to take months to do it?

Someone needs to get on the ball, this isn’t a little issue. People expect to be able to add video to their posts on message boards. And if they can’t get it here, they are going to go somewhere else. I used to sit down and watch videos on here. Now I go to Youtube to do it. I am quire certain I’m not the only one.

Sincerely,
An increasingly frustrated LumberJock

I think we can all watch youtube and vimeo while they get this sorted out. Sure it’s a business, but more than that i think it’s really a labor of love. It’ll all get worked out in time.

Both MsDebbie and Martin have commented on this more than once. Bottom line is, They disabled video because of spam and they are going to make video embedding work the same way photo embedding does. I totally understand that, but it’s been over a month. Why not wait to remove the video feature until after then new way is ready?

I proposed a solution in the site feedback section to add a approval process as a means of keeping spammers away. Not sure which solution would be faster.

John, last I knew this site was part of Escalate Media. Escalate Media touts their size and work with fortune 500 companies on their website. I guess I assume they can handle this problem in a reasonable amount of time.

If I’m wrong, and it’s just Martin, I’ll gladly be more patient. But I still think they should restore the old embed feature until the new one is ready.

I agree with you Stumpy. I’ve been holding off on updating a video tutorial blog for a few weeks now, because of this issue… don’t really want to write a blog that says “here’s a link, go watch it there, and then come back to read the rest of what I have to say”

I must also admit that I don’t recall having seen any spam that abused it either…

This is the site feedback section, Wayne. But I suppose more than one thread about this can’t hurt…

I never saw the problem with spammer videos, not saying it wasn’t a problem, just that I never saw it; but I have to wonder if the real problem wasn’t the 1500 new spam accounts per day and the board being under-moderated in general. I’m not criticising the job that any one person is doing, only saying there probably needs to be more people doing it. There are plenty of even keeled users here who would likely volunteer, if asked, to help moderate. In closing I’ll say that I have noticed a big improvement in stopping spam and I appreciate the efforts of those running things.

I never saw it either, but it must have been REALLY bad because we all got punished for it…

I assumed it was just Martin and MsDebbie – if the site is owned by (edit) an inc 500 (end edit) company that makes a huge difference!

In the words of Gilda Radner… “Nevermind!”

I don’t think Escalate is fortune 500, their site just says they WORK with fortune 500 companies. As long as those companies don’t need video embedding…. sorry, I couldn’t help it :)

In no way is Escalate Fortune 500. I think they purchased the site from Martin or something like that and he does some work for them on it. In the early days it was just Martin.

Never heard of Escalate Media before. They look like an advertising company though, like DoubleClick. I don’t see where this site is owned or operated by them.

Looks like Martin is the developer of the site, so he’s probably coding it all on his own.
