Howdy- Need your help identifying the species of veneer on the top of my buffet. It was likely built in the thirties. I just had stripped, and am now in the process of refinishing.. I’ve been told either rosewood or Ebony, but the rest of the buffet is walnut. Thanks!

With the irregular and nearly black grain, it looks like ebony to me. The two species that look the closest are macassar and mun ebony. If you scroll through the pictures in the links, you can get a feel of what it might be. At the bottom of the macassar page in particular, there are some pretty similar ones.

One tricky thing is that veneers are often rotary-sawn, meaning they peel thin sheets in sort of a spiral starting from the outside of the log, so the grain patterns are going to manifest themselves a little differently than pieces of lumber.

In any case, you’ve got a beautiful piece an good luck with the refinishing process.

I’d say Macassar ebony as well.

Very nice! I’ll put a vote in for Macassar ebony.

Have your say...
