Topic tags/keywords: question router finishing arts and crafts

Hi all,

I plan on building one of those kung fu fighting benches out of spruce wood for my master’s birthday. On top of it, I would like to rout the family logo and a chinese text. Is it a good idea to darken the routed text with woodstain or will it spread beyond the groves? If you think it is a bad idea, I’m open to suggestions.

Sorry, if the woodworking related terms aren’t correct, I’m german and I have to work with dictionaries :-)

Thanks in advance

Use a coloured acrylic varnish, it won’t bleed, sand the top back once it done to leave crisp lines. Try it on a test piece first.

Stains & dyes will bleed – giving you an edge that is not crisp.

Consider painting the letters and then using your topcoat over everything.
