I’m making a mohogony door. I conditioned the wood with a 1 lb cut of dew axed shellac. Ten applied Mohawk grain filler. Used a mahogany gel stain but I couldn’t stain the entire face of the door because the stain was drying too fast. I had to do it in sections and I now I have some lighter and darker areas. Any suggestions on evening out the color?

I would use steel wool to attempt evening out the color and even meke it overall lighter than I want the final finish. Then I would stain with a non-gel, slower drying stain.

I wiped the heavy areas with a sheet and that helped. The next day I I used a slightly damp cloth with minera spirits to even out the color. I’m reasonably happy now. Next time I won’t use gel stain on a large project.
