What is the best way to saw Maple (Red or Sugar) for figure? I am planning on just quarter sawing the tree for the figured woods and sawing everything else so that I can use as much of it as I can (the real goal is just a handful of gunstocks).

HI… maple is rather boring.. unless it is figured already… like bird’s eye, spalted, or fiddle back, so I would flat saw it to see the the growth rings.

Yep. I found a big guy with some cankers on it and a nice coke bottle shape to it, so I think it has birdseye and some fiddleback to it.

Awesome.. would love to see it if you get the chance to post some pics. I tend to collect a lot of rough woods. Welcome to LumberJocks. :)

I can try, but I may booger up the sawing (probably will in fact).

I have seen some beautiful patterns in quarter sawn soft maple (similar to QS sycamore). Flat sawn is usually pretty boring unless it has birdseye, quilted, or curly figure.
