I just moved to Langley BC, and am a new woodworker. I just finished the Paul Seller’s workbench, and half-way through the Anarchist Tool Chest by Chris Schwarz.

I’m wondering if anyone can provide a lumber yard or wood source recommendation in the general Langley area. I don’t mind driving out, if that’s what it takes.

p.s. hand tools are a lot of work. Think I might look at getting bench top planer soon :)

Here’s the reply from Jim Sollows. Posting (below) for reference, in case someone else needs the same info.

If anyone has sources for local hardware stores (non-Borg), similiar to Preston Hardware in Ottawa, ON, please don’t hesitate to share.

Welcome to Langley! Avoid Home Depot at all costs. Their lumber is awful and sheet goods are really cheap junk from China. A 4×8 sheet of oak ply will potato chip on you in days!

Here are the ones I use. I hope this helps.

P&D Taylor Industries
11691 – 216th Street
Maple Ridge
(604) 466-0955
These guys have really good prices on rough lumber. Mostly maple but they do have others. These guys are my favourite supplier.

Reimer Hardwoods
31135 Peardonville Rd.
These guys have everything under the sun but not open on weekends. They cater to the big contractors so when you walk in they kinda look down their nose at you when you tell them you just want a couple boards. I know others have not had that experience with them but it has been mine.

Smith Plywoods
5674 192 St
(604) 574-4393
Can’t beat these folks for quality sheet goods.

Winsor Plywood
5750 203 St
(604) 530-7355
They have a limited variety but prices are a little high for lumber because everything is S4S. Good prices on sheet goods. They also deliver.

Welcome to the neighborhood! One other source is a place called Hardwoods to get/targo woods in Bellingham. They are great to deal with and only a short drive south. I have not dealt with either Rymer or P&D.

Can’t say enough good things about Smith Plywoods for sheet goods and Jim’s assessment of Winsor’s prices being a ‘little higher’ is a bit of an understatement.

Have your say...
