I’m not supposed to tell anyone this, but it’s a line of top-notch infill planes for less than $100 OK…I don’t have a clue either, but a guy can hope, right? -- "Give me your poor tools, your tired steel, your huddled masses of rust." Yep, I ripped off the Statue of Liberty. That's how I roll! |

Lee Valley was at the wood working show in Denver last weekend. They are introducing a new line of “premium” bevel down bench planes. At this stage no bevel up, including block, planes. The new planes will have “much tighter” tolerances. Be made of an “all new” material. I guessed brass, nope, granite? nope, gimme a hint, nope. They were pretty tight lipped. I was there to buy a bevel up jack and looking at an apron plane and I suggested maybe I should wait until the new line comes out before I buy. They said no, if was looking at bevel up planes might as well buy now, the new line is only the standard bevel down bench planes. I really couldn’t get anything concrete out of them other than, new line of bench planes, tighter tolerances, new materials, higher prices. They were pretty up front about that part, the higher prices. Cripes, it’s not like the present line of Veritas planes is inexpensive. I assume new styling, maybe something a little more aesthetically pleasing, cleaner lines, more shiny parts. New materials might only mean the knob and tote. What else are you going to make the body out of, and still have all of the desirable properties of ductile cast iron. My curiosity is piqued. I’ll be taking a look next week. |

Speaking of premium planes, take a look at Holtey. Their shoulder plane sells for 4200 Pounds Sterling not including V.A.T. That’s $6280 USD. $5742 USD for a smoother. Now that’s a premium plane. |

Just saw this over at ukworkshop, New Veritas Block plane UKW exclusive announcement. It doesnt really say anything, other than they are announcing a new line of planes come monday morning. Curiously it does say New Block Plane. I was lead to believe by the Lee Valley guy that is was only the bevel down bench planes. I guess we’ll have to wait til monday to know for sure. |

And a couple more blurbs from over at sawmillcreek. From a post by Joe McMahon “I got a chance to examine, hold and play with two new planes coming from Lee Valley on Nov 24th. Rob Lee said that he commissioned the designers to make the planes without regard to cost as he was looking for quality , fit, finish and function. The designers didn’t let him down with two versions of the same plane, a standard model as well as a top of the line model which is made from a new metal that is not stainless steel yet will resist rust and tarnish as well as ss. After they were designed, Rob then told the designers to produce both planes but save some $ on the cost. Again they replied with two excellent planes that are priced right. Both were as fine a melding of metal parts as you will find anywhere. They fit the hand like a glove and had the heft and strong feel of a solid piece of metal. While I didn’t have the time to try them on wood, I am certain that they will perform as well as they look.” From a post by Mike Brady “I got a quick glance at the planes at WIA. Let me say that I own no planes from this maker. I believe they offer a high quality product and unsurpassed customer service. That said, if you are a fan of innovation in design and materials, you will like these. If you are a fan of the planes from Maine, maybe not. Think Bridge City. I would bet that they will perform very well, and most likely will be at a higher price than their current offerings.” |
