I have been hoping to come by a few certain hand tools at the local flea markets but everything has been over priced recently.

I was looking over craigslist and noticed that an ad I saw a couple weeks ago was up again. It was for a vintage carpenters chest with misc older tools.
The seller was asking $60.

His price kind of made me feel as tho he didnt consider the ‘vintage’ part to be a good thing. I also noticed that he didnt specifically list much about what was in the chest and he hadnt bothered to lower his price in the weeks he had it online.

I took a chance and sent him an email.
I was up front with him and said that I cant afford his price and honestly my tool budget was in the single digits due to our son being born (5 weeks old now)
I told him that if he really was just wanting the room in his garage, I would be happy to give the old tools new life and put them to work.

Well, he responded and said he would love for them to be used again and that I can come pick it all up for free!

The chest had a ton of odds & ends, a few block planes (one really small one I could see being useful) along with an assortment of tools

The best part:

-I now have a story piece to store hand tools in
-3 pieces I was looking for at flea markets were included (hand brace, egg beater drill & try square)
-In the bottom I found 4 hand saws (2 of them are Disston Porters!) and they are in pretty good shape.

Anyways, I know that none of these items are worth a ton, but for a guy with limited budget and still trying to build my tool collection, this was a good day!

Free is good. I see quite a few good users in there, plus a pretty cool chest. Nice snag.

Oh and YOU SUCK!

Definitely gloat-worthy! Nice find on the chest and vintage tools, and a very good starter kit toward full galootness.

Nice score, there are a lot of good things in there to get you started. Besides what you mentioned, the coping saw, file handles, and miter box will be useful, among others. The brace looks too have a shorter sweep on it, 8 or 10” so it will be good for driving screws and not too large of holes, or it might be wider than it looks. Nice to have the chest too.
