I need help. Was using this table saw I’ve had for almost 2 years yesterday, working fine, then after changing blades, I turned on the saw & the blade turned slowly & stopped. Removed the blade, restarted & the arbor did not move. Pushed reset button, motor started, arbor turned but smoke came out, it appeared to come from the motor. The belt looks ok, the tension seems good. Any ideas ? Of course I am in the middle of a project. I am not really mechanically inclined so that’s a problem. I am hoping I don’t have to call sears, since their repairmen ruined my last table saw. This is the replacement.

If ya let the smoke outa the motor, you’re gonna need a new motor.
That diagnosis is from what ya posted. Sorry.
Do you have a motor shop nearby? I wouldn’t bother calling Sears. They have no clue.

Sounds like you maybe over worked the motor. Are you cutting very dense woods? Sometimes with cheaper universal motors, the extremely thin sheathing on the motor windings will melt if you give it too much resistance to turn, such as forcing really thick and / or dense materials through it on a regular basis. Not saying this is how you used it necessarily, but it definitely sounds like you have a shorted motor which means you will need a new one unfortunately.

Great. I had been cutting some glued up 1&1/2” & 2&1/4” poplar. Not what I usually do. I have a protection agreement , a carry over from the last saw, which means I could get the motor replaced, but sears would have to do it, a scary thought, & it would take forever.

yea, letting the magic blue smoke out of an electric motor is really no fun at all. good luck with the repair.

Just to cover all bases, it can’t hurt to check the motor capacitors.

It isn’t always a big deal to replace the motor. Why call Sears? They will probably send someone that knows about as much about it as you do.
Take the motor off and take it to a shop(google for your area) . Like Knotscott says maybe it is the capacitors and you get off cheaper than a repair call and new motor. One bit of advice I would add is if you don’t have the manual….take a picture of it before removal and take a picture of the wiring before disconnect. YOU can do this if you just think your way thru it.

since the OP paid for extended coverage, why on earth would he attempt the repair himself? if he’s lucky, the inept sears repair tech will further damage his current saw and sears will, as done previously, provide a replacement.

Problem solved. My best friend, who I call for anything & everything, came to look at the saw & found the problem within minutes. The small, undersized, set screw on the motor pulley had come completely loose & the pulley moved to the end of the spindle, sending the belt off track & causing some burning & fraying on one edge of the belt. Belt still usable, but will order a new one & try to install it myself. A first. So, I assume, the smoke was coming from the belt & not the motor. Glad to be wrong there. It’s running again, cost me nothing & I am making sawdust & smiling. Thank you all for your time & input.

Great….be sure to put some loctite on the set screw.
