I wasn’t sure which forum I should use, so here it is, I’m pretty sure I’ll have questions at some point…

I started this two days ago, the first one was a disaster, then this evolved out of that…

Its not full size but I was able to work out the basic structure yesterday…

I’ll be making 3 out of oak, mahogany for the structure, and the possibility exists that I’ll use maple dyed red to use as an inlay for the lettering, the hinge pin is brass wire.

I like the hinges. As the grain runs up and down the long axis of the book are you concerned that the covers may break along the grain line?

Hi Mark,

I pretty much used what I had laying around to get an idea of what I’d like to do…

Nothing is set in stone as far as the grain direction is concerned…

The two options I see is the grain running the same, and depending on how it ends up I’m considering a bit of a soak in thinned epoxy to lock up possible movement of the wood….

I’m am sort of guessing but I think it would work

That is the good part about prototypes, you can figure out the bugs. I suppose it depends on the wood you are using on how readily it would split. I wish you success with this.

I finalized the design of the hinge last night. I may add Maple dowels along the strapping, which will be the same three species of wood I used for the picture frame I built her, (oak-mahogany-maple)...

The hinges are based on a design from a project of Airframers. If I remember it was a pair of calipers or dividers he designed and built…

I had to make a couple of repairs because I did a booboo measuring, but it is a prototype.

I add the link later.
