So my wife came up to me yesterday and said “You know it’s our fifth anniversay next month, right?” Luckily, I could say “Of course”. The following question “Do you know what the customary gift for a 5th anniversary is?”

Oh man, busted. I have no clue.

So she told me it’s wood. YES! Finally, 5 years of marriage is paying off! She said she wanted to get me something I would enjoy and use for years, because buying me a picture frame just doesnt make much sense. I was thinking of getting a set of chisels to replace (more like supplement) my rag tag bunch of chisels I’ve acquired over the years. Does anyone have any experience w/ the new Stanley “Sweetheart” chisels?

I would love to get a nice set of Lie-Nielsen’s, but the price just doesnt make sense for us and as a gift.

An other good ideas? I am setup with just about every other tool I could want or need. Maybe you had a creative gift for your 5th anniversary?

Oh, and I thought you wanted suggestions for a present for your wife…

I have the full set of the Stanley sweetheart chisels and am very happy with them. I don’t however have anything to compare them to, since they are my first chisels. I choked on the price, and had massive buyers’ remorse at first. All my doubts were gone as soon as I started using them.

Happy anniversary.

Although I haven’t tried them myself, I keep hearing great things about the Narex chisels.

Well, I don’t think you’d regret getting the Stanleys.

I have the new Stanley sweetheart set as well. Like Sandra, they are my first chisels, but they seem to hold an edge reasonably well. I would venture to say they are worth the price.

On the flip side , what are you getting/making your wife?

Edit – asked and answered about the wife’s present. Happy anniversary!

Yep, if it’s your 5th, you gotta give her some wood! (insert blushing smiley face here) :-)

New chisele is a great idea. I need some too. I tend to abuse my chisels since I also do framing carpentry. What I need to do is get some that I only use for woodworking.

Joe, I was thinking it. Wouldn’t want to break any false idea though that I might be a lady ;)

Apologies to any whom I may have offended :-(

As long as he didn’t buy her a vacuum cleaner for their anniversary ,that would sentence a man to the doghouse for a month.

No apologies Joe, I got a chuckle out of it.

Yeah, a vacuum cleaner would not be recommended…..
I’d say the desk is going to be fantastic. But for the record, it only counts if it’s completed for the day of your anniversary. “raincheck” gifts tend to be frowned upon.

Ah . . . back up a minute. Basically what you recount in your first 4 lines is that your wife EXPECTS the ‘5TH anniversary customary gift’ of WOOD. I’d add a candlelight dinner to that as well.
