That’s a good question that has been asked, but not answered, in the past:

I know that this type of stuff has been going on for a long time on LJs. But the problem appears to be going to another level. For instance, the most recent such profile is currently the user named
“Purchase Eulexin Generic Without Prescription – Eulexin Buy Online, Order Eulexin Next Day Delivery”

That user ID is probably a hint that this is not someone looking to share his or her passion for woodworking. But what I believe is new behavior is that the link to the user’s home directory redirects to the Dark Side.

For example, my home directory is:
http://lumberjocks.com/ChuckV

The above mentioned user’s home directory is similar but with “eulexinp1a” in place of “ChuckV”. This looks normal. But, following that link goes to the Canadian Drug Store at:
http:\\bestcatabs.com\men%27s-health\eulexin.html
(I flipped the slashes around so this won’t be a valid link.)

I don’t spend much time looking at these bogus profiles, so maybe I am mistaken and this has been happening all along. But it sure seems like such redirection is not healthy for LJs.

just keep flagging and blocking. I’ve flagged and blocked several in the last couple of weeks. At least if they are blocked they can’t hammer my post.

I do not know how a profile can be flagged. But, as I describe above, my experience with the recent spam profiles is that I cannot even view them because I am redirected to the Canadian Drug Store!

... nothing against Canada intended.

Lew, that is what I suspect too. And I find it sad. I know LJ is free for us and that the ads pay the bills, and the ad revenue is based on traffic. That’s just business on the internet. But it just doesn’t feel right when you know those numbers are so inflated because of obvious spam accounts. Some poor schmuck trying to make a living with a web-store is getting stiffed on his advertising budget. Not all those ads are for Amazon or Rockler. Some are for small sites who probably blow through their monthly quota by the 2nd of the month. If we know it as users, the forum owners have to know it, and google/bing/aol/etc probably know it too with their tracking and analytics.
There are so many security add-ons that would turn the flood of spammers into a trickle, or stop them outright – ranging from captcha’s and IP-banning up to moderator-approval of new accounts.

Don, that’s crazy talk right there…

It’s a serious problem, don’t mean to make (too much) lite of it, but it’s not being addressed and there’s nothing I feel I can do about it…

Captcha was added a couple months ago to try and slow down the spam account creation. Obviously more is needed.

Received the following email notification tonight.

Clicked the link to go to my profile to see the comment and got this from McAfee

I now can’t view my own profile on LJs. The spammer goes by the name (on this occasion) of asiruuslp. It seems that McAfee won’t allow me to go to any of the fake posts to flag them, but I was able to go to his profile and block him from doing any further damage.

I strongly suggest anyone reading this does the same before he infects your profile or posts like he has mine.

Hopefully LJs can stop them before they do any more damage. They’ve already infected about 372 profiles/posts.

BLOCK THEM NOW.

Over the past hour, there have been 30 such new profiles. Blocking is futile!
