felt wheel on plane blades

The old timers use this method to sharpen their chisels so I use it to sharpen both chisels and plane iron and my first wheels came from HF and they make a bit of a mess but work well. I can shave with my iron.

I have a hard felt wheel, that I got from Lee Valley (about $30) and I use it probably too much. I usually get the plane blades and chisels sharpened correctly once a year, but I constantly touch them up with the felt wheel. It has a tendency to round over the back, so you don’t have a real straight angle. I don’t worry about it, but some folks might. My blades are extremely sharp and that’s what I’m after.

so i guess you just try to angle the bevel so it will touch flat with the wheel? I assume you have to either have the wheel spin the other way or hold the blade upside down to prevent it from cutting into the wheel. How hard do you press against the wheel?

I used a buffing wheel with green rouge from time to time. It
works great. You have to be a little careful not to overbuff the
edge because one second it’s razor sharp and the next it’s rounded
over.

The method I have learned is to stone sharpen until the edge is square and rather sharp, (DO NOT WORK THE FLAT SIDE) then use the buffing wheel and buff just until the burr that was left on the blade from the stone sharpening is gone and then it should be perfect.
